Work has been so crazy lately. We have been jam packed with births that I seriously wonder where all the pregnant people are coming from. I have been really exhausted from it all because I have been working my butt off and being called in on my on-calls! But hey, it's job security right?!?
On Thursday, I was asked to work 11-7 instead of my normal 3-11 shift bc we were super busy and being the nice co-worker I am, I agreed to it sacrificing my afternoon play time with iris! Well, that bit me in the butt and I ended up having one of the worst days in a long time. The managers were not on the same page and I think they abused me a little and I ended up breaking down and lost it. I felt like an idiot crying at work but I had enough! Needless to say, one of the managers apologized and tried to make the situation better! I actually had some of the best patients that day but I was just exhausted!
Then we get to Saturday. I was having a great day! We were FINALLY slow and I had 3 of the best patients! My night was going great until I heard about a sick mom in ICU. She wasn't doing well after delivering and we were trying to find available staff to take her baby to ICU and get them to do skin-to-skin as much as possible. I took 1 hr away from my patients and volunteered myself and I am glad I did! It was a bittersweet moment for me. Here I am a mom of a healthy baby girl and I was to meet a sick mom with a healthy beautiful newborn baby. It took great strength for me to walk in there but I collected myself and held my head high. Mom had tubes everywhere. On a vent and I just prayed instantly! I talked with the family that was in the room and talk to the mom. I knew she was there in spirit. We fed the baby then I stripped the baby down to the diaper and placed her right on mom's chest. I had to be creative around all the cords but instantly the baby was relaxed and quickly fell asleep. I reached for mom's hand and placed it on her sweet baby! I tried not to think too much because when I did, I could feel my eyes start to burn. But right then and there I was thankful that I went up here. That was a hour that they had together. A special moment they both needed and I truly felt that the baby was helping heal her momma!
I hated to leave but it had been an hour and I had patients who needed meds, help with breast feeding and other needs so I was off to find another co-worker to stay with them!
Today when I got to work, I found out that she had passed away this morning! I was so deflated after hearing that. I so wanted this mom to make it and to have what I have. Being a mom is such a joy and it seemed unfair she only had a few hours with her baby! But I am thankful I met her because that story will live with me forever and it will forever shape the nurse that I am and will become!
So, I leave you with the silliest picture of my little joy because she is amazing and is what I live for! I thank God every day for each second, day, month that I have with her!
Cherish every moment!
